Cycling (MOL Bubi & Buying a Bike)

Getting around on a bike is highly reasonable, cheap, and eco-friendly.

• MOL Bubi (Bike-Sharing): This is a massive bicycle-sharing network with more than 160 docking stations in the city center. A monthly pass costs 1,000 HUF (~2.5 EUR). With this pass, you can rent an apple-green bike and ride for up to 30 minutes for free. To keep riding for free, simply return the bike to any station before the 30 minutes pass and immediately rent another one.
• Buying a Bike: You can buy new bikes at major stores like Decathlon, Hervis, or from local manufacturers like Csepel. For used bikes, search on Jófogás.hu (the Hungarian eBay), Facebook Marketplace, or join the Facebook group “Used bikes for sale in Budapest”.

Taxis

You can hail taxis on the street, but it is safer and cheaper to book them over the phone, online, or using mobile apps.

• All official taxis in Budapest are uniformly yellow (enacted since September 2013).

Common Mistakes

• Assuming Metro Lines Run All Night: The metro lines (M1, M2, M3, M4) do not run 24/7. They operate daily from 4:30 AM until 23:30 PM. If you are out past 11:30 PM, you must switch to using the night bus network.
• Attempting to Buy Suburban Tickets in BudapestGO: Suburban extension tickets (for travel outside the Budapest administrative borders) cannot be purchased in the BudapestGO app. You must use the MÁV app or website instead.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Can I use my student pass on the 100E Airport Express bus?

No. The 100E Airport Shuttle bus requires a special single ticket which costs 2,200 HUF. General student passes (including the Country, Pest County, and Budapest student passes) are not valid on this line.

2. What happens if I forget my physical student ID card at home but have a valid pass?

If a ticket inspector stops you and you do not have your physical student ID with a valid semester sticker on you, you will be treated as traveling without a pass and fined up to 25,000 HUF. Photos of the ID on your phone are not accepted.

3. Can I transfer from a bus to a tram using a single ticket?

No. A standard single ticket is only valid for one uninterrupted ride on a single vehicle. Once you step off the bus, that ticket expires. If you transfer to a tram, you must validate a brand-new single ticket. The only exception to this rule is transferring between metro lines without leaving the station area.

4. What is the difference between an Express bus and a normal bus?

Some busy bus routes offer express services. These buses skip minor stops to reach destinations faster and are easily recognized because they have the letter “E” appended to the bus number (e.g., 7E).

5. How long can I ride a MOL Bubi bike for free?

With a valid MOL Bubi monthly pass, you can ride for up to 30 minutes for free per journey. You can return the bike to a docking hub within 30 minutes, immediately check out another bike, and enjoy another 30 free minutes.
