How to Get Your Hungarian Health Insurance (TAJ Card)

As an international student in Hungary, getting your TAJ Card (health insurance card) is essential. It gives you access to public healthcare and is strictly required if you want to work legally during your studies.

Route A: Scholarship Holders

(Stipendium Hungaricum, SCYP, and Diaspora Holders)

Scholarship holders receive free public healthcare once the TAJ card is issued.

How to Apply

our initial application is handled right on campus. You must bring all required documents printed and fully filled out to the Student Office. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Required Documents Checklist

Application Form (IGÉNYLŐLAP): Printed and filled out.
Authorization Form: Signed by you and two witnesses (anyone you know can sign as a tanú / witness).
Passport Copy: The page with your photo and personal data (must be valid for at least 3 months).
Residence Permit Copy: Copy of both sides of the card (must be valid for at least 3 months).
Accommodation Reporting Form (Szálláshely-igazolás): The 1-sided paper containing a large QR code downloaded from your Enter Hungary storage account.
Letter of Award: Downloaded from DreamApply. (Note: This proves your stipend; do not print your Scholarship Agreement).
Original Student Status Certificate: A physical certificate with an original signature and stamp.
- Important: You must pick this up in person from the student services office. Digital signatures downloaded from Neptun are not accepted for your first application.

Route B: Fee-Paying Students

Fee-paying students are not automatically entitled to free state healthcare. To get a TAJ card, you must buy into the national health insurance system.

The Cost: A monthly contribution of 87,240 HUF. (This rate is fixed by law at 30% of the Hungarian minimum wage).
How to Apply: You must apply in person directly at the National Health Insurance Fund (NEAK) office.

How to Renew Your TAJ Card

If you already have a TAJ card and need to renew it, you must handle this in person at the NEAK office.
